20-Point Power Wheelchair Maintenance Guide

At Access Medical, we are proud to work with you in maintaining your wheelchair. In order to provide the best possible service for you and your chair, we carry out a comprehensive 20-point assessment. The chair will be inspected in full detail, covering the wheels, electronics frame, and all hardware to ensure the chair is working in a safe and reliable manner. We always check the following:

  • Threads on tires are sound and tires pressure is good

  • Axles are free from hair, dirt, and rotate freely

  • Bearings checked and spin freely

  • Bolts on both drive wheels and casters checked and tightened

  • Batteries tested for both voltage and load to confirm they are sound and hold a charge

  • Cables and electronics checked for damage and proper function

  • Joystick and power actuators checked and function appropriately

  • Motors checked for proper function and response

  • Brakes checked for safety (engaging/disengaging)

  • Caps, covers and shroud sections checked for damage or loss

  • Frame checked for any cracks, rust or damage

  • Seat upholstery and base hardware is sound and not missing screws, etc.

  • Armrest pads and hardware checked for tears and are tightened

  • Release levers, latches and locks checked for damage and proper function

  • Legrest hangers are secure and disconnect freely

  • Footplates tightened and operate correctly

  • Lap belts and any straps checked for safe operation (buckle closes and opens with ease)

  • Hardware for lateral, adductor and abductor supports are tight and pads are sound

  • Seat cushion and backrest checked for wear and tear
